[Tag] Make it Anime

Yes, Moya is responding to another old tag, but why shouldn’t I? In this age of half-hearted live action adaptations of animated pieces, whether there are books/movies that can benefit from the anime treatment is an interesting question. This tag was created by Average Joe Reviews, and Lynn from The Otaku Author was the one who tagged me (a long, long ago).

Rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog post.
  • Choose 1 Book, Movie and TV show of your choice that you think could work as an anime. (A series of books or movies is allowed e.g. Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games)
    • If you want to pick more than 1 from each section that’s fine. Or if you can’t think of one for a specific category that’s fine also.
  • Explain why you think your choices could work as an anime. Maybe the advent of animation would enhance it, maybe the different anime genres could help expand and improve the story. Just go crazy with it.
  • Link back to the original post so I can read people’s suggestions, I’d love to read everyone’s ideas.
  • Include Make it Anime in your tags so everyone including myself can find them all easily.
  • Nominate around 5-10 bloggers.

Book: Guardians of Ga’Hoole

Kathryn Lasky is amazing and it saddens me that kids today don’t seem to read her animal adventure books anymore. In addition to owls, she also did wolves, bears, and horses! Anyone who enjoyed the Warriors series should absolutely read Kathryn Lasky.

So I think owls need more representation in anime. I know Guardians of Ga’Hoole has a movie (which I have not seen), but let’s face it, talking CGI animals in “live action” movies generally do not have charm. Also, I can’t really think of an existing anime series featuring animals that takes itself seriously without trying to parody human life – not for the roughly preteen age range I’m thinking of anyway. It would be a unique and pretty piece.

Movie: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Out of curiosity, I tried to look up silent anime films just now, but the only thing that pops up is A Silent Voice no matter what keywords I use. There must be a few old ones out there that I just don’t know about?

I watched The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari for a first year university class, and admittedly don’t remember much in terms of plot, which didn’t make much sense anyway. Maybe that’s all secondary to the meticulous mise-en-scène, and indeed, I can still vividly recall the look of several specific scenes. I want to see it adapted into an equally artsy anime film that gets made fun of for being elitist, perhaps in the style of Angel’s Egg, Vampire Hunter D, or Belladonna of Sadness.

TV: Cowboy Bebop

10/10 series; now, if only it had an anime adaptation?

TV Honourary Mention: Derry Girls

I don’t watch as much TV as I would like, but I am enjoying the first season of this series my coworker recommended me, about some utterly savage Irish girls. I don’t know, but I feel like a big reason TV series are enjoyable to people is because they get attached to certain characters or their actors over the seasons. Because of this, I don’t feel like turning a popular TV series into an anime would necessarily make it better, unless it has a particularly fantastical premise or is known for a certain aesthetic that may look interesting in animated form.

This series, however, is one that I can see adapted as an exaggerated slice-of-life, in the anti-CGDGT (cute girls doing cute things) style of Asobi Asobase or Nichijou!
