As the title says and as you should learn to expect by now, this tag has been in my backlog forever before I randomly decided to engage with it. I do love the premise, especially when travelling is still banned in my province (for good reason).
Here are the rules:
- Display the My Pirate Crew logo and add ‘My Pirate Crew’ as a tag.
- Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.
- Link back to the original post here (so I can compare your crews to mine).
- Select seven anime characters and give them a position on the crew.
These are the positions you can fill: warrior, sniper, chef, doctor, scientist, navigator, strategist, mechanic, entertainer.
- Nominate 5-10 bloggers.
- Set sail and rule the seas!
Thanks for nominating me many ages ago, Average Joe, rossiroad, Keiko, and Matt-in-the-Hat! Half of these people are no longer active bloggers and are highly unlikely to see this post, but I can only hope they’re off enjoying their own exciting journeys in life.
There are many great contenders, but Sango from Inuyasha is my final choice. Sango is knowledgeable about survival, can fight wild beasts and large monsters, and is one of few anime characters I can think of who fights efficiently with a boomerang. Moreover, she’s also empathetic and emotionally resilient, and would probably get along well with other crew members.
Alternative choice: Rider (Fate/Stay Night)
Sniper: Riza Hawkeye
I chose Riza from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood mostly because she was the first suitable character I could think of who’s an actual sniper. Riza is efficient and reliable, and has good judgment in difficult scenarios. Moreover, she understands the horrors of war and wouldn’t resort to violence unnecessarily.
Alternative choice: Yuuri (Girls’ Last Tour)
There are almost as many good cooks in anime as terrible cooks, but when I’m off sailing at sea for what might be months or years, I want Hei from Darker than Black to cook me some Chinese comfort food. This might be an unwise choice as Hei himself would probably consume most of the ship’s resources, but maybe that can be overlooked for what he brings to the table… He can even double as a power-generating electrician!
Alternative choice: Archer (Today’s Menu for Emiya Family)
Okay, Ginko from Mushishi isn’t exactly a doctor, but he’s close enough. Who knows – some of those sea sicknesses might be caused by invisible insects? Ginko’s calm and knowledgeable, and always carries with him a cabinet of medicines/poisons. I hold my ship doctor to high standards, and Ginko’s logical attitude and open-mindedness would make him a good fit.
Alternative choice: Rutile (Land of the Lustrous)
Scientist: Atsuko Chiba
Sure, it’ll be cool to have someone who can invent crazy things or perform unimaginable experiments, but if we’ll be spending such a long time stuck on the same ship, a scientist who specializes in psychotherapy may be a good idea. And not just any form of psychotherapy, but dream therapy! I’d very much like to have Dr. Chiba from Paprika on board to guide us in a world of interconnected dreams. And if any of her complicated gadgets require maintenance, I’m sure the ship mechanic and Hei the electrician would be available.
Alternative choice: Aoyama (Penguin Highway)
Riko from Made in Abyss has all the curiosity, courage, and survival skills necessary to make a good navigator/scout. And I’m sure she’ll take the best field notes and draw the most accurate maps whether we’re exploring unknown lands or finding our way at sea. Not to mention that she can also help Hei with the cooking.
Alternative choice: Yuno Gasai (Future Diary) (*yandere navigation power)
Don’t come arguing with me about how much Season 2 of The Promised Neverland ruined everything. I haven’t seen it and don’t know if I will, but Season 1 is something special and I was consistently wowed by all the plans the kids came up with. Ray and Emma are equally good choices, but Norman’s personality might make the nicest addition to the crew. He’s quiet, laidback, and still very amicable. Would be nice to have another younger crewmate to keep Riko company.
Alternative choice: Togame (Katanagatari)
If we’re talking about maintaining something as huge as a ship, Kamajii from Spirited Away seems like the right guy, with his 6 arms and remarkable industriousness. He just seems like a wise and reliable guy. I’ll treat him better than his previous employer, I promise!
Alternative choice: Chito (Girls’ Last Tour)
Entertainer: Penguin Trio
Am I breaking the rules by choosing a 3-in-1? But the penguins from Penguindrum would be a great addition. They can be helpful or counterproductive, but even when things seem to get out of hand, the damage caused is usually magically restored. Do they truly exist? Whatever. Who wouldn’t want three penguins emoting for them and keeping them company?
Alternative choice: Tohru (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)
This is an old tag and I know many people have done it already, so I’ll be skipping nominations. Anyone interested in doing this still – by all means, consider yourself tagged! Leave me a comment or not; please don’t be shy if you want to pick it up.
Thanks for reading this quickie. Stay safe, stay adventurous!
